With keynote speakers Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki and Deputy Minister of Labour Kostas Karagounis, the CNN Insights event took place under the title: “ReSkilling/UpSkilling: The Answer to the New Needs of the Market.”

The event, which marked the beginning of the third cycle of the CNN Insights initiative, brought together participants who discussed the evolving landscape of the labour market in Greece and Europe, the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, the need for new skill development and the impact of demographic shifts.

In her address, Minister Zacharaki referred to a new legislative initiative—the creation of “vocational academies”—a significant new tool designed to better connect local labour needs with specialised training centers (SAEK branches), offering targeted vocational education.

Similarly, Deputy Minister Karagounis focused on the new realities of the job market shaped by the decline of unemployment, the government’s brain regains initiatives, as well as the training programmes implemented nationwide to develop skills that align with the market’s emerging demands.

Following the speeches, leading figures from academia discussed international trends and their impact on Greece, the effects of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the connection between education and the labour market and how upskilling and reskilling are evolving into strategic tools for competitiveness and growth.

The event took place on Tuesday, September 29, at Aigli Upstairs (Zappeion Garden) and is part of the CNN Insights series organised by CNN Greece, which highlights and explores in depth pressing current issues. The event was also broadcasted live via streaming, allowing the wider public to watch the discussion in real time.
